School-Wide Behavior Expectations

General Expectations
Students will:
- Show respect and cooperation
- Include all students
- Follow directions/rules the first time they are given.
- Play and work safely, while keeping hands, feet, and objects to themselves.
- Follow school safety rules.
- Respect both school and others' property.
- Follow district and school-approved rules for games.
- Stay in assigned play areas beyond the red line.
- Not bring gum or candy to school.
- Eat in the lunch or snack areas only.
- Wear attire to school that is approved by the Long Beach Unified School District, and Madison School.
- Not use profanity.
- Not have in their possession dangerous items.
- Use Conflict Resolution techniques to solve problems cooperatively.
Playground
Students will:
- Arrive at school no earlier than 7:30 a.m. There is no supervision on the playground until then.
- Follow the general rules.
- Use the restroom and drink water before the bell rings to return to class.
- Leave toys, games, and other playthings at home.
- Not wrestle, play tag, excessively chase, or play fight.
- Not throw rocks or other dangerous objects.
- Leave nature in nature.
- Take turns and share equipment.
- Collect the balls and equipment and place them in the buckets when finished.
Lunch
Equipment
Apparatus:
- No object is to be carried by any child while climbing on apparatus.
- Bars are for children who can reach them without help.
- At least one hand must be in contact with apparatus at all times.
- No sitting or standing on apparatus.
- No playing under apparatus.
- Only two people on a single bar at one time. One person on traveling bars.
Play Structures:
- Begin one at a time in only the approved direction.
- Students may exit from the side exits or down the slide away from the flow of student traffic on the structure.
- Never interfere with other children while they are climbing, hanging, or sliding.
- Tag, chase games, or loitering on the structures are not permitted.
Balls:
- Red rubber balls, volleyballs, and basketballs are not to be kicked.
- Balls are not to be bounced or kicked against any classroom.
- Hard balls used for kicking must be used for kickball only.
Conflict Resolution Procedures
A. Students will attempt to solve problems among themselves before seeking teacher intervention. Conflict Resolution strategies are as follows:
Statements children will make:
- What was done that you didn't like.
- How it made you feel.
- What you want from that person.
- What you can do to help solve the problem.
Rules to follow:
- No interrupting
- Give eye contact
- Stay on the current issue
A two-way exchange will take place:
- Child A follows the above statements. Child B listens, reflects, and repeats in his/her own words what Child A said.
- Children switch roles. Child B talks, and Child A listens and repeats.
- Children work together to come up with some solutions.
B. If conflict is not resolved, students should seek an adult or designated peer conflict manager to facilitate them in the above process.
Positive Reinforcement
REWARDS:
When students choose to follow the rules, rewards will be used to encourage consistent good behavior. The following positive support will be provided for students following the rules:
- Blue Tickets will be given to students caught in the act of doing something special for others, following the guidelines for success in the cafeteria and on the playground, keeping our campus clean, avoiding conflict, etc. These slips may be redeemed for weekly prize opportunity drawing. Students will be responsible for collecting and turning in their Blue Tickets.
- Good news phone calls home from the principal will be made to those students who have been referred by a teacher for doing an outstanding job in the classroom or on the playground.
CONSEQUENCES:
When students have chosen not to follow the rules, the following consequences will result:
- Verbal Warning (unless the infraction is on the Automatic Citations/Intolerable Behavior list)
- A yellow Warning Citation may be given for minor infractions. Yellow warnings will be given to the classroom teacher and sent home to be signed if infraction becomes habitual. (Three warnings in a week)
- A pink Behavior Citation will be given for more serious infractions.
Pink Citation System
The following citation system will be in effect for each month:
1st citation: Parent must sign citation and return.
2nd citation: Teacher calls parent. Loss of recess.
3rd citation: Student is sent to counselor/principal for parent to be contacted by him/her.
4th citation: Principal conference with parent and student.
** In the case of a severe disciplinary problem the student may be immediately suspended for one to three days. Parents must attend a readmit conference.
Automatic Citations / Intolerable Behavior
The following behaviors will receive no verbal warning and can result in principal/counselor intervention and/or suspension:
- Fighting
- Seriously intending to cause physical injury to another person
- Displaying defiant and disrespectful behavior to adults
- Using extreme profanity and/or obscene language or gestures
- Causing damage to property
- Stealing
- Possessing anything at school that relates to drugs or gangs
- Possessing dangerous implements, objects, weapons or look-a-like weapons at school
